I started working in gourds within the last year and found this to be a great media in which to apply my design and color knowledge. I am enjoying it immensely and have found that the creative possibilities are endless. Living in New Mexico for almost 30 years I have naturally been influenced and love the Native American designs that are so inherent in this state and culture. The desert landscape and animals that call the desert their home have also influenced my work.
My gourd designs are done on natural grown dried gourds. The art is a combination of pyrography, leather dyes, acrylic paint, and some detail done using technical pens. My designs are all original, freehand drawings with most of the design planning done on the actual gourd as I work. Nothing is planned out beforehand. It is work that I truly enjoy and am only in the beginning stages of this imaginative and creative art form.
