I have been a resident of Cochiti Lake, a small community on the Pueblo de Cochiti, for 21 years. My wife, Betty, and I enjoy a quiet and peaceful retirement. Plenty of time to engage in hobbies making turquoise necklaces and chokers, creating stained glass window pieces, gardening, and especially raising gourds and fashioning rattles which we use when gourd dancing at PowWows. My gourd dancing began 19 years ago and then decided raising gourds would fill in the time between PowWows. We raise bell, dipper and peyote gourds. The peyote gourd rattles that I fashion use ironwood or Mexican mahogany sticks, horsehair and silver tubine tips, and buckskin fringe that are made with or without beading.
